World Cup 2026 bronze final: France vs. England betting analysis
The final of the FIFA World Cup takes place on Sunday, but first there’s the matter of the dreaded third-place playoff.
The 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico was the first where the top four seeded teams reached the semifinals. However, most pundits weren’t predicting that France and England would lose their semis in such dramatic fashion.
Both teams playing for pride
France didn’t show up against European champions Spain and ended up losing in a shock 2-0 defeat.
England went ahead against Argentina in their semifinal but couldn’t keep out Golden Boot leader Lionel Messi. The reigning world champions roared back, scoring twice in five minutes to book their place in the final.
Will England chop and change strikers?
Curiously, some sportsbooks are pricing up some of England’s squad strikers to score first.
| Player Name (Country) | Odds (DraftKings) |
| Kylian Mbappe (France) | +280 |
| Harry Kane (England) | +500 |
| Ivan Toney (England) | +600 |
| Ollie Watkins (England) | +600 |
| Marcus Thuram (France) | +650 |
| Ousmane Dembele (France) | +650 |
Behind the inevitable Mbappe for France and Kane, DraftKings has Ivan Toney and Ollie Watkins as the next likely first goalscorers at +600 each.
That’s a heavy assumption that England coach Thomas Tuchel will swap out Kane for the third-place match. With this likely being Harry Kane’s last ever World Cup game, that’s unlikely to happen.
Better options are further down the list, with Ousmane Dembele (five goals so far) the sensible anytime scorer pick at +155.
Expect a few goals
The third-place playoff is, by and large, a meaningless bronze medal match where the shackles come off. Teams play with more freedom and players who had a poor semifinal look to make amends.
| Total Goals (Over/Under) | Odds |
| Over 2.5 goals | –215 |
| Under 2.5 goals | +175 |
There have been 3+ goals in four of the past five World Cup third-place playoffs. With Golden Boot hopefuls Kylian Mbappe, Harry Kane, and Jude Bellingham all on the pitch, expect more.
| Year | Score |
| 2022 | Croatia 2–1 Morocco |
| 2018 | Belgium 2–0 England |
| 2014 | Brazil 0–3 Netherlands |
| 2010 | Uruguay 2–3 Germany |
| 2006 | Germany 3–1 Portugal |
France vs. England: best prop bets
- 3-leg SGP (Same Game Parlay): France win / Mbappe to score anytime / Bellingham to score anytime (+585 @ FanDuel)
- Over 2.5 goals: -215 (DraftKings)
- Ousmane Dembele to score anytime: +155
France vs. England prediction: France to win (-115)
World Cup third-place games can be real spectacles as teams go for it in what is essentially a dead rubber.
With four of the most prolific goalscorers on the pitch at the same time, we expect lots of goals.
‘Over 2.5 goals’ is the sensible odds-on play. However, we also expect France to secure the win and third place.
