Thunder are perfect in the playoffs
The Thunder have been dominant in the postseason, sweeping their first two series. They have won six of their eight postseason games by double figures, and they were without Jalen Williams (17.1 ppg) for the last six games, but he should be back for Game 1.
Meanwhile, the Spurs took out the Minnesota Timberwolves in six games in the conference semis, crushing them 139-109 on the road to close out the series. They are 8-3 in the playoffs with only one road loss.
Spurs vs. Thunder Game 1 betting analysis
The Thunder had the best record in the league this season and had everybody’s number, except for the Spurs. San Antonio won four of five games against OKC this season and handed them two of their seven home losses.
Award winners face off
This series sees Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (31.1 ppg), who recently won his second straight MVP, face off with Defensive Player of the Year Victor Wembanyama (25 ppg, 11.5 rpg), who finished third in MVP voting.
The Thunder feed off Gilgeous-Alexander’s ability to attack the rim, but Wemby — who led the league in blocks (3.1) — is the best rim protector.
OKC must get back to defense
Oklahoma City ranked second in the league on defense this season, giving up an average of only 107.9 ppg. In their one win over the Spurs this season, they allowed 98 points. In their four losses, they allowed an average of 118.5.
Spurs’ backcourt is an issue
While Wemby gets most of the press, the Spurs’ backcourt trio of Stephon Castle (16.7 ppg), De'Aaron Fox (18.6 ppg), and Dylan Harper (11.8 ppg) is one of the main reasons they are in the conference finals. They have played well in the playoffs, and in Game 6's closeout against the Timberwolves, they accounted for nearly half of the Spurs' 139 points.
Getting Jalen Williams back will be big for the Thunder, both on offense and perimeter defense.
Thunder guard Ajay Mitchell (13.6 ppg) took Williams’ spot when he was out injured and stepped up, averaging 22.5 ppg in the last series.
OKC bigs must step up
Seven-footers Chet Holmgren (17.1 ppg, 8.9 rpg), who finished second in Defensive Player of the Year voting, and Isaiah Hartenstein (9.2 ppg, 9.4 rpg) will be tasked with guarding Wemby. However, their offense will also be key, and they need to hit their shots and get Wemby out of the lane, so Gilgeous-Alexander can attack the rim, but it's a tall task.
PlayersBest pick: Spurs +6.5
The Spurs are not intimidated by the loaded Thunder, winning four of five games against them this season, including two in OKC. The Thunder have the experience as the defending champs, but the Spurs have the swagger and Wemby.
This highly anticipated matchup will see a close Game 1, with the stars shining. The Spurs will continue to give the Thunder trouble, and while they may not win, they will give OKC a fight and, at least, cover the 6.5-point spread.
Spurs vs. Thunder Game 1 player prop picks
Here are some player prop picks we like for Game 1 between the Spurs and the Thunder at BetMGM Sportsbook:
- Steven Castle 20+ points (+210) – Solid value for a player who had 32 points in the last game and has gone for at least 20 points in three of the last five games.
- Victor Wembanyama Under 3.5 blocks (-145) – In five games against OKC this season, his high in blocks was two.
