Man City vs Southampton | 18.09.2021

The Premier League is already well and truly underway as we have started to see what teams are running with their momentum and what teams have already hit a slump in their season. There is still a long way to go yet and this weekend brings with it a number of interesting match ups.

One of these matchups is no doubt the Man City vs Southampton fixture. The Saints do not have a fantastic record against the Citizens but their defence has looked solid this season. They will be looking to hopefully add another draw to their tally of 3 as a point from the Etihad is surely all they can hope for. City may have stumbled on the opening day of the season but since that first game they have been nothing short of unbeatable. 4 wins on the spin including a 6-3 midweek humbling of RB Leipzig in the Champions League has us seeing exactly why City were crowned Premier League champions last season. Guardiola’s side are starting to find their rhythm. While there were initial concerns about the fact that City didn’t sign a striker, the goals have still been coming thick and fast from all areas of the pitch. The Saints have not exactly been setting the world alight with their football this season but to be fair, they haven’t been losing either. Hasenhuttl’s men lost on the opening day of the season but since then they have played out 3 draws in a row, 2 of which were against strong opposition in Man United and West Ham. Saints fans shouldn’t feel too concerned about these results early in the season especially considering how tough their run of fixtures have been. Unfortunately, it’s only going to be tougher at the Etihad on Saturday. If the Saints can snatch a point on the road again here they will be more than happy with that.

The head to head record between these two sides does not make for pretty reading if you’re a Saints fan. City have always found a way to beat Southampton whether by narrow margins or with bags of goals.

The Saints last recorded a win against City in 2020 but aside from that one off victory, City have won 9 of their 10 most recent fixtures against Southampton.
