Canadian NHL hockey teams have a storied history when it comes to lifting the Stanley Cup. There has been major success for some of the Great White North teams but this success has not been followed up for many a year now. It has been 29 long years since the last Canadian hockey team lifted the Stanley Cup but is there any hope for a team to potentially rise to NHL glory this season?
The last time a team from Canada lifted the Stanley Cup was in 1993. Patric Roy led the Montreal Canadiens to an exciting win over the Kings which marked the last time that a Canadian team would lift the Stanley Cup. The Canadiens have also been the most recent side from Canada to have a crack at the title, losing out to the Lightning in the 2021 final. It’s been years of heartbreak now for the Canadian sides but there may yet be a glimmer of hope heading into this season as there are a few teams who are looking as strong as ever.
While the drought has continued now for almost 30-years, there is hope for the teams from Canada to potentially lift the cup this year. The Montreal Canadiens made the final in the most recent season but they are not even tipped as the hottest Canadian favorites to vie for the title in this season. The odds on favorites from Canada are the Edmonton Oilers and the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Oilers have lifted the Stanley Cup 5 times with their most recent win coming in 1990. However, the Maple Leafs, who were once the jewel of Canadian ice hockey, have not lifted the cup in more than 50-years.
Both of these teams have a strong selection of players which is why they are being tipped to go deep in this season’s competition. There may yet be light at the end of the tunnel for Canadian hockey and that light seems to be the Oilers and the Maple Leafs.
