PlayAlberta Online Site Launches

Publish Date: 22/10/2020

There’s a new star in the gambling sky, with the online casino industry’s expansion in Canada continued this month with PlayAlberta going live for the first time ever.

Operated by the Alberta Gaming Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC) it has become the only legal gaming platform physically based in the province. PlayAlberta will offer an extensive library of games to its customers with popular slots titles and table games both hosted on the site.

The grand unveiling of the new service came in the form of a press release issued on 1 October.

“October 1, 2020, marks the launch of PlayAlberta the regulated, online gambling website available to Albertans over the age of 18 and physically located within the province’s borders,” the statement began

“An impressive platform of virtual slots and table games will be available at launch, with more features being added in the coming months. In addition to popular land-based and online titles, PlayAlberta.ca integrates AGLC’s best-in-class GameSense responsible gambling program, which promotes healthy gambling behaviour with access to tools and resources via GameSense.”

Platform availability and tax revenue expectations

The platform can be accessed through a computer, tablet or smartphone and all players will be asked to verify the age before signing up to play with the operator.

The AGLC have also placed on record its commitment to supporting the continued use of brick and mortar casinos in the province.

“To support the relationship with existing venues, AGLC has established an online gambling advisory committee consisting of representatives from Alberta’s gaming industry. This will ensure that Play Alberta complements Alberta’s land-based venues while allowing online players to have access to a legal and secure website,” the statement continued.

AGLC President and CEO Alain Masonneuve has backed the plans, claiming that the new platform will give Alberta citizens exactly what they’re looking for.

“PlayAlberta.ca is another way AGLC is delivering a responsible gambling choice for the benefits of Albertans,”

“The province’s regulated online gambling website will offer players expanded entertainment options with integrated responsible gambling features and generate revenue to support valuable programs and services Albertans rely on every day.”

It is expected that PlayAlberta will raise a significant amount of tax revenue for the region. Between 2018-2019, gaming generated a whopping $1.4billion for the province’s General Revenue Fund and the addition of an online casino is likely to see this increase further in the future. However, it is unlikely that the revenue will spike right away as casinos across Alberta were forced to close in recent months due to Covid-19.
