The biggest women’s university basketball tournament is making its way back to Nova Scotia. It may be more than 18-months away but already the excitement is building towards the start of the championship. Cape Breton University is already preparing themselves to host the event, as it will be the first time since 1980.
It came as somewhat of a surprise that the championship would be hosted by Cape Breton as Sydney is a small town and the school is not exactly massive either. However, the women on the Cape Breton team are pumped up for the start of the tournament and are rearing to show their stuff. Cape Breton forward Hailey McCleod said that she is excited to show the other teams that their small town has far more talent than they will expect. The team are waiting patiently for their chance in 2023 but for now, the next tournament will be hosted by Queen’s university in Ontario.
While the Cape Breton team waits for the championship to begin in 2023, they are kicking off their season at a freshly renovated Sullivan Fieldhouse. The Fieldhouse has undergone a major facelift and now looks akin to a far more professional place for the Cape Breton women to play at. A player on the squad even said that the facility has an “imposing” feel to it which may just work in the team’s favor this season.
Hopefully the Cape Breton women’s basketball team can have a stellar season to give themselves the perfect momentous push into the major championship in 2023. There is plenty of optimism surrounding the team but they will need to perform on the court if they are to be taken seriously by some of the other elite college sides in the league.
