College Basketball Thanksgiving Weekend

Week Two Review

#1 Gonzaga faced off with #2 UCLA, and the game was not close at all. The Zags walked out with a comfortable win, beating the Bruins 83-63. NCAA basketball is not afraid to pit good teams against each other and schedule potential upsets, unlike college football.

This past week also showcased the now #3 Purdue Boilermakers on top of both then ranked #18 North Carolina Tar Heels (93-84) and then #5 Villanova Wildcats (80-74). The now ranked #7 Villanova team themselves beat the #15 Tennessee. Lastly, #22 UCONN beat #19 Auburn in double overtime by a whopping 115-109.

That was the good, now the ugly (and maybe best part of college basketball) the upsets. Wisconsin squeezed out the win against #12 Houston 65-63. Meanwhile, Cincinnati shocked #14 Illinois with a 71-51 victory. Read about all of the updating odds on the basketball betting odds page.Β  Furthermore, the Michigan Wolverines kept losing, first to Seton Hall, almost to UNLV, and then lost to an unranked Arizona 80-62. Looking forward Michigan will have a hard time with San Diego State in the near future.

Thanksgiving Weekend Preview

THURS: Georgetown vs. San Diego State

The Georgetown Hoyas make the trip west to Anaheim on Turkey Day to play the SDSU Aztecs. This matchup seems like a potential 8-9 matchup in March Madness. This is only the second time these teams have ever played (the last time was in the 80’s). The Aztecs are a solid team lead by Mensah and Bradley, but the team has been playing to the skill level of their opponents. They pulled out a close win against a good Arizona State squad, as well as close victories to the lesser skilled Texas-Arlington and UC Riverside. State’s one loss came to #18 BYU, but they barely lost that matchup 66-60. Look for the Aztecs to pull out the win, but the spread should favor the Hoyas.

FRI: #5 Duke vs. #1 Gonzaga

The Zags play back to back elite teams. This matchup very well could be a Final Four showdown, yet we are graced with it in November. Both teams have absolute studs of basketball players on their rosters. The early bets for the John Wooden Awards favors Timme of the Zags (+350) and the Blue Devils’ Banchero (+650). It’ll be fun to watch these two go head to head on the court in a neutral site in Las Vegas.

The Gonzaga Bulldogs handled UCLA easily and now look to do the same with Duke. Duke themselves have already beat #10 Kentucky, and I’d expect them to make this closer than the 20 point blowout Gonzaga had with UCLA. However, Gonzaga is hot and the whole team is playing well together. Look for the Bulldogs to take the victory, perhaps closer to a 6-10 point range.

SAT: #18 BYU at Utah

In college basketball rivalry games have the biggest potential for upsets. BYU has only to travel 45 minutes north to Salt Lake to play the Utah Utes. The energy will be crazy and this will be the biggest test for BYU so far this season, despite pulverizing Oregon and squeezing past SDSU. BYU should still get the win, but this game will be surprisingly closer than expected. Look for betting on the Utes for the spread and BYU for the moneyline.

MON: Notre Dame at #14 Illinois

Illinois will not be ranked (or at least ranked as highly) after losing to Cincinnati and being upset by Marquette. However, they still are a good team and they will face Notre Dame. Notre Dame has only lost to Saint Mary’s (who just lost their first game of the year to soon-to-ranked Wisconsin). The Fighting Irish still have to play Texas A&M before their matchup against the Fighting Illini, but should win. Illinois themselves are playing a lesser-tiered team in Rio Grande Valley and should win. Therefore, this matchup should be a good one. Illinois is the heavy favorites so far, so get in on the Notre Dame spread and moneyline before the odds shift too much towards Illinois before Monday.
