College Basketball Week 2 Preview

Beginning of the Season Recap

The college basketball season tipped off  last Tuesday and has already been filled with must watch games, upsets, and outstanding plays. #9 Duke took down #10 Kentucky 79-71, in what could be a preview of an elite 8 matchup this year. Other highlights included Kansas beating Michigan State 87-74, #1 Gonzaga beating #5 Texas handily, and #2 UCLA beating #4 Villanova in overtime. Drew Timme of Gonzaga, Duke’s Paolo Banchero, and UCLA’s Johnny Juzang look like early standouts on the court.

Upsets

The best parts of NCAA basketball are the upsets. Navy outshot #25 Virginia, BYU clobbered #12 Oregon (81-49), Florida shocked in state rivals #20 Florida State, Seton Hall came back to beat #4 Michigan, and on the last few plays Marquette managed to beat #10 Illinois. Soon, there will be more upsets after a weekend of close matchups. The odds for this weekend have not been released yet, however it is easy to stay up to date with the Playersbest’s Basketball Betting Odds tool.

Weekend Games to Watch

Friday, November 19th

Oakland Grizzlies at #14 Alabama Crimson Tide

With a series of National Football Championships, it’s not hard to root against Alabama. Everyone likes a good underdog story, and Oakland University (Michigan) is a huge underdog. Oakland beat a top team in Oklahoma State and Toledo, a mid-tier team. Their only loss was a close matchup to big-division West Virginia in the first game of the season, but even that was close (60-53). Oakland has the capability of taking down an undefeated ‘Bama team that has played a soft cushy schedule so far.

#4 Michigan Wolverines at UNLV Runnin’ Rebels

Michigan is coming off an upset loss to Seton Hall, and while the Wolverines have a good team, it is clear they are not the powerhouse that the number 4 ranking attached to them shows. UNLV is the biggest school in Las Vegas, however they are still a mid-tier basketball team. The Runnin’ Rebels have a strong defense excelling with rebounds, steals, and blocks. Michigan should still win this matchup, but the spread should go UNLV’s way. Saturday, November 20th

#18 North Carolina Tar Heels vs. #6 Purdue Boilermakers

The two highlighted Saturday matchups are both being played in the Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament in Uncasville, Connecticut. Both North Carolina and Purdue are undefeated in three games so far. Purdue has 7’4″ Edey playing Center, who looks like the real difference maker in this game. Purdue has been playing better defense, while scoring buckets. Look for the Boilermakers to win by at least 10-15 points.

#5 Villanova Wildcats vs. #17 Tennessee Volunteers

Villanova only has a 2-1 record, but that loss came to #2 UCLA in overtime to start the year. Tennessee boasts a 3-0 record, but has played bottom of the barrel teams so far. Having played a close game to arguably the best team in the nation, Villanova should have the competitive advantage to take down a solid, but under seasoned Tennessee team.

Early Thanksgiving Matchups

Seton Hall  Pirates at #19 Ohio State Buckeyes (Monday the 22nd)

Seton Hall upset Michigan and will be ranked by the time they play Ohio State. The Buckeyes scraped together a win against a weak Akron team, and don’t look like they have put it all together yet. Seton Hall should strike against their 2nd ranked team of the year.

#25 USC Trojans at St. Joseph’s Hawks (Thursday the 25th)

The best game on Turkey Day is a solid USC traveling to Philly to play a Hawks team that can certainly upset. USC has already travelled to Philly this year to take on Temple and barely escaped 76-71. St. Joseph’s is a much better team and all of that coast to coast traveling can wear down on a young USC team. Look for Taylor Funk and the Hawks swooping the buckets to beat USC.

If you’re like me and enjoy a good upset you will probably enjoy betting on UFC as well. Enjoy this pre-Turkey Day weekend while you keep up to date on all of the UFC betting odds.
