The Big 10 Conference Tournament will likely be as wild as the Big 10 regular season. Two schools share the title for regular season conference champions in Wisconsin and Illinois. Wisconsin had every chance to win the title, but after a fluke loss to Nebraska, and an impressive win over Iowa by Illinois, the Badgers stumbled at the finish line. At least six teams from the Big 10 should make it into the big dance. However, there is a chance eight to nine teams could even make it in depending on how well those teams do in the Big 10 Conference Tournament. The Big 10 Conference Tournament takes place in Indianapolis starting March 9th (Wed.) and ending March 13th (Sun.). During those five days, thirteen games will be played to decide the conference champion. The winner of the Big 10 Conference Tournament will get an automatic bid into March Madness.
Not much to say here, the four worst teams in the Big 10 will have to face each other in the first round. Two of the four teams will make it to the second round where they will have to play either #6 Ohio State or #5 Iowa. Out of the first round teams, Nebraska is on the best winning streak, while Northwestern has the best NET rating (at 82). However, it will take five victories to win, so these odds are more for winning big on a small bet (a half-court shot type of bet).
14. Minnesota Golden Gophers +25000
13. Nebraska Cornhuskers +25000
12. Northwestern Wildcats +6600
11. Penn State Nittany Lions +10000
The majority of teams find themselves battling it out in the second round, where they will need four victories to win the Big 10 Conference Tournament. All of these teams are in the top 100 in NET (NCAA Evaluation Tool), though realistically only three to four of these teams will make it in. Iowa, Ohio State, and Michigan seem to have won enough regular season games late to secure an at-large bid into March Madness.
Both Michigan State and Indiana have lost seven games out of their last ten to end the season. Michigan State and Indiana will need at least one victory to make March Madness. Therefore, watch out for the Hoosiers to upset Michigan, and/or the Spartans to beat Wisconsin (possibly without Davis).
Iowa will play the winner of Northwestern and Nebraska matchup, while Ohio State will play either Penn State or Minnesota. Iowa will have the easiest path, as they will face 18-12 Rutgers if they can win in the second round.
10. Maryland Terrapins +3300
9. Indiana Hoosiers +1400
8. Michigan Wolverines +1000
7. Michigan State Spartans +1400
6. Ohio State Buckeyes +1200
5. Iowa Hawkeyes +400
Illinois may have the chance to win it all during March Madness, but can they beat the best of the Big 10 first?
These four teams have the easiest path to a Big 10 Conference Tournament Championship, as they only have to win three games.
4. Rutgers Scarlet Knights +1200
Rutgers has been hot as of late, and have tantalizing odds for only winning three games. However, Rutgers has done it before in the season by beating Iowa, Illinois, & Wisconsin, which is a possible tournament matchup. The Scarlet Knights will matchup with the winner of the Iowa game in the second round, where the Hawkeyes will either play Northwestern or Nebraska.
3. Purdue Boilermakers +250
On paper Purdue is the best team in the Big 10. However, with late losses to Michigan, Michigan State, & Wisconsin (and a narrow-victory to Indiana), there seem to be chinks in their armor (especially defense). Despite their slide, Purdue have good odds, and will take on the winner of the Ohio State game in the second round, where the Buckeyes will either play Penn State or Minnesota.
2. Wisconsin Badgers +700
Wisconsin is a great team, but top-player Johnny Davis has a right ankle sprain and may not play in the tournament at all. With him, these are the odds you want, without him, there is no way the Badgers can win the tournament. They will have the winner of the Michigan State and Maryland game in the quarterfinals.
1. Illinois Fighting Illini +350
Illinois is the top team, and they have the easiest path to the championship with a quarterfinal game against either Michigan or Indiana, and a semifinal game more than likely against Rutgers or Iowa. Cockburn commanded top draft pick status with his double-double against Iowa scoring over 20 points and 14 rebounds. Cockburn makes Illinois a good choice to win the tournament.
