The second College Football Playoff Rankings were released Tuesday and we saw plenty of movement from the first week. Michigan State fell to the 7th spot after losing a tough game against Purdue, and Oregon moved up to number 3 and Ohio State sits at number 4 as we enter the season’s final weeks.
Michigan moved up to the 6th spot ahead of Michigan State despite losing to them 2 weeks ago. In the Big 10, Michigan State and Ohio State can control their own destiny and Michigan needs a little bit of help to win the conference.
Let’s take a look at the Big 10 Teams in Contention to see who has the easiest path to winning the conference and making it into the CFP.
The Wolverine’s loss to Michigan State was gut-wrenching 2 weeks ago but the season changes so much from week to week that Michigan now finds themselves right back in the playoff discussions. Michigan would lose the tiebreaker to Michigan State if both teams ended the season 11-1 so they need the Spartans to lose on the road next week against Ohio State and then the Big 10 title will likely come down to the big rivalry game between Michigan and Michigan State.

The Buckeyes are in a great position to get back to the CFP
Ohio State struggled in last week’s win at Nebraska and will face a Purdue team that comes into Columbus riding a ton of momentum after their big win last week against Michigan State. Ohio State will definitely earn their way to the Playoffs and face Michigan State and Michigan following their game against Purdue. If Ohio State can finish their regular season with only one loss and win the Big 10 Championship game, they have a great chance to get the 2 seed behind Georgia.
The Spartans control their own destiny like Ohio State despite the loss last week on the road vs. Purdue. Michigan faces Maryland this week and then has a big showdown against Ohio State the following weekend. Michigan State showed some holes on the defensive end against Purdue and will need to tighten things up on the backend before facing an Ohio State offense that has plenty of firepower.

The Spartans can control their own destiny and have a Heisman contender
Walker III moved up to +300 to win the Heisman despite last week’s loss and sits right behind Bryce Young from Alabama who is at +185. The Heisman will likely go to the player that is on the team that finishes the season with the best record so if Michigan State can run the table and Alabama falls to Georgia, Walker III has a great chance to become the first Heisman trophy winner in school history for Michigan State.

Oklahoma is still ranked 8th in the 2nd CFP rankings as the CFP committee is putting more emphasis on scheduling than ever before. Oklahoma has a shot to improve their resume this weekend when they head to top 15 opponent Baylor. The Sooners have been a different team since they switched Caleb Williams to QB in the second half of the season and I think they are one of the only teams left in the playoff field that will be able to give Georgia or Alabama due to their running QB Williams. To beat physical SEC teams you have to get them out in space and Williams can make plays with his legs and wear down defenses late in the game like Lamar Jackson does for the Ravens.

Oregon is in control of its destiny in the Pac 12
The Ducks just need to win out and they will be included in the final four this season. Oregon has been a little inconsistent this season and played some teams close that they should have blown out while at the same time impressed like they did in their big early-season win at Ohio State. The big game on Oregon’s schedule that is concerning is an upcoming trip to Utah next week, where the Utes seem to play like a totally different team and are 4-0 this season.
