An exciting SEC season wrapped up last week and the two teams that most expected to face off in the SEC title, Georgia and Alabama, will meet up in Atlanta this Saturday for the SEC title game.
Alabama was the preseason favorite to win the SEC title but fell to Texas A&M midway through the season and had to claw their way back into the top 3 and finished up the regular season 11-1. Georgia put up one of the most dominant defensive performances in SEC history and did not allow more than 17 points in a single game all year on their way to a 12-0 record. The Bulldogs are favorites to win the National Championship
Georgia is nearly a touchdown favorite over Alabama in what will likely be a 75% Georgia crowd in Atlanta. Alabama struggled in the Iron Bowl against Auburn and needed 4 overtimes to pull off the win.
Alabama will enter this game as an underdog for the first time in over 5 years and I suspect they will come out of the gates with an aggressive game plan to try and get Georgia to play from behind for the first time all year. Bryce Young will be the most mobile QB the Georgia Defense has faced this year and it will be interesting to see if Young will be able to move the ball on the Tide defense. I like Alabama +3.5 in the first half as both teams likely take a while to get settled and I can see something like a 10-10 or 10-7 halftime score.
Both Georgia and Alabama recruit at the highest level in college football and as a result, their offensive and defensive lines are filled with 4 and 5-star recruits. Neither squad has faced the caliber of athletes they will face on Saturday and as a result, I think both offenses will struggle to move the ball throughout the game. I like the Under here as I think Georgia QB Stetson Bennett will struggle to throw the ball against the Tide defense and this will be a game that will ultimately come down to which team can have the most success running the ball and wear down the other side late in the game. The Crimson Tide hope to pull off the upset in Atlanta
Alabama heads into the SEC Title game in a must-win situation after their lackluster performance in their win over Auburn in the Iron Bowl. Alabama needs to beat Georgia to be included in the College Football Playoffs while Georgia can afford a loss and still make it into the top 4. I think Alabama is the more desperate team and as a result will come into the game with an aggressive game plan and they figure a way to pull off the big upset.
Kirby Smart spent over 10 years on Nick Saban’s staff before taking over the Georgia program in 2016. Smart has been recruiting at a top 3 level since he got to Georgia and his hard work is paying off as he has the Georgia program positioned to flip Alabama as the top dog in the conference. Saban is nearing the end of his coaching career and lives for games like this and the chess match between Saban and Smart will be worth keeping an eye on.
Bryce Young enters the SEC title game as the favorite to bring home the Heisman trophy and will need to have a big day against Georgia to stay as the favorite. If Alabama gets blown out by Georgia and Young has a bad day he will likely slide down the Heisman chart as the voters typically vote for players on teams that are peaking at the right time. On the other hand, if Young has a big day and leads the Tide to the upset the Heisman will be heading to Tuscaloosa.
