What does this mean for Wyoming?

Wyoming will be the 13th state that DraftKings operates in, and the 14th for BetMGM. The two operators will give customers a smattering of sports betting options, NFL, NCAA, NBA, NHL, MLB, and a few other more lesser known events like Esports or the Nathan’s Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest.

Wyoming will allow for anyone over the age of 18 to place bets online. This is different than the majority of states that only give the option to those who are 21 or older. The Cowboy state will similar to Tennessee in that it will allow only online wagers. For now there are no plans for brick and mortar locations.

How Did Wyoming Get to This Point?

Interestingly enough, the House of Representatives for the state held a vote back in March for House Bill 133 which would have legalized mobile wagering on sports but voted against it. Just one day later they had the lawmakers would look again at the bill and this decide to pass it along to the Senate.

When the Bill arrive at the Wyoming Senate it was passed on a 24-5 vote. Shortly thereafter on April 6th 2021, Wyoming’s Governor Mark Gordon officially signed the bill into law.

The Wyoming Gaming commission’s Executive Director Charles Moore was not fully onboard with the law at the start. However, the commission got over their concerns and accepted the job to make Wyoming’s new laws the best that they could be.

Four different drafts and a month and some change later, the Wyoming Gaming Commission had it’s rules finally come out in June of 2021. They looked at a number of states with legal sports betting for inspiration, especially Tennessee to no surprise. A 45 day public comment period came next and during those days the Wyoming Gaming Commission startde to allow potential operators to apply for licenses.
