The Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) was finally settled between the MLB Players Union and the owners. After 99 days the two sides came to agreement, which will last five years, until the end of the 2026 season. They agreed to terms with each other, just in time to keep a full schedule. Opening Day was pushed back a week, and will now be on Thursday, April 7th. To make up for the week of lost games, there are scheduled to be a few double headers to ensure a full season. Players are already reporting to Spring Training, with games starting on Thursday, March 17th. The owners got what they wanted in terms of increasing their profits. The CBA agrees to add advertising to jerseys and helmets, which copies other sports like soccer. On top of that, playoffs have been expanded from 10 teams to 12. Adding two more wildcard games is great for MLB the company, and copies every major sport with relatively more playoff teams. Both the owners and players benefit from a higher luxury tax threshold, which allows teams to stay competitive and players to make more money.
Both the owners and players benefit from redefining service time requirements. This will limit the amount of exploitation of service time with young players, and reward owners with draft picks for rookie players on the roster. Young players especially prosper with the new CBA. The minimum base salary has been raised for young players, and young stars will get pre-arbitration bonuses.
Just having baseball in full is a win. However, and expanded playoff certainly is exciting. The designated hitter will now be in both American and National Leagues. A lot of traditionalist baseball fans are upset by this, but it should add more offense to baseball. Just look at how impactful Edgar Martinez, Big Papi, & Nelson Cruz have been for the American League. Honestly, just having a universal rule seems like a win.
2023 will bring a better pace of play as pitchers will be on time counts, there will be an automated ball and strike for accuracy, and there will be a ban to defensive shifts. All of this will lead to more offense and a smoother, more modern game to keep viewers interested.
Ohtani is redefining what being a major leaguer is. He was undoubtedly the MVP of the 2021 season with 46 home runs, 26 stolen bases, and a nine and two record on the mound with 156 strike outs.
Trout has three AL MVPs, with four second-place finishes as well. Honestly, he should have more than three. He was injured last year and will look to continue to be Mike Trout, the perennial all-star, MVP, and G.O.A.T.
Not only did Vladamir hit 48 home runs last year to lead the league, he hit a .311 batting average. The third baseman for the Jays finished second in AL MVP voting last year, and will have a good shot at it this year.
Soto finished second in the NL MVP race last year. He lead the league in walks and on base percentage with a .465 average. He is only 23 years old and looks like he’ll be giving Tatis a run for the MVP every year.
The Padres have something special with Tatis, and have favorable odds to win the World Series in 2022 (+1600). Tatis is electric, he is a five-star talent at the MLB level. As long as he stays healthy, he has a chance to win the MVP award year after year. Out of all the MVP bets, he looks like the biggest winner.
The Braves won the World Series without Acuna, who was hurt most of last year. This year Acuna will bring his all around talent back to Atlanta, and will look to bring them home an MVP award as well.
