The Cardinals and Rams face off in one of the biggest Monday Night Football games of the season in a game that should have major implications on the NFC playoff picture. The Cardinals are 10-2 and are on the cusp of locking up first place in the NFC West while the Rams are 8-4 and first in the Wild Card race but have several teams on their heels.
Kyler Murray returned to the Cardinals last week after being out for 3 weeks recovering from an ankle injury he suffered against the Packers. Murray will have DeAndre Hopkins, who has also been out for several weeks, back in the lineup as the Cardinals look to build offensive momentum before they head into the playoffs. The Rams are in a mid-season lull having lost 3 of 4 after a great start and will look to turn things around and hope to pull off the big road upset. Kyler Murray leads the Cardinals into a big NFC West matchup tonight
The Cardinals are the home favorites with a relatively close point spread which is a bit surprising considering the Cardinals beat up on the Rams 37-20 earlier in the season. The Rams will likely come out swinging early in the game and have the Cardinals try to play from behind. The NFC Wild Card playoff picture is suddenly very crowded and the Rams need to finish well to get one of two wild-card spots and a win against the Cardinals would give them a firm grasp on the top wild-card spot.
Get Kyler Murray over 265 yards passing
I think Kyler Murray will have a big day in front of the home crowd with Hopkins back and throwing for more than 265 yards. Murray only threw for 123 yards last week against the Bears and it’s rare to see a player with his level of talent have back-to-back games with so few passing yards. I expect the Cardinals to come out firing on offense as they try to finish off the season undefeated on their mission to lock up the 1 seed.
Hopkins is a player who thrives when he gets plenty of touches and I suspect coach Kliff Kingsbury and Kyler Murray are going to get him the ball early and often.
The last time the Cardinals were on the national stage they lost a heartbreaker to the Packers on Thursday Night Football and this will be a big opportunity for the Cards to send a message to the rest of the NFC that they are the team to beat. The Cardinals have a one-game lead over the Packers for the top seed in the conference and the last thing they will want to do is head to Green Bay in late January in the playoffs. I think the Cardinals get off to a fast start and are up by at least a touchdown going into halftime.
Kirk doesn’t get a ton of national attention but he is having one of the best seasons of his career with 632 yards and 40 receptions through the first 12 weeks. The Rams defensive line are one of the best in football and in situations when Murray feels pressure in the pocket Kirk should get plenty of screen passes tonight and I think he gets past 50 yards easily.
Matthew Stafford has struggled with inconsistency this year
The Cardinals have the fourth-best passing defense in the league so far this year and are only allowing 205 yards per game. The Rams thrive on pushing the ball downfield with Matt Staffords big arm and will try to get Conner Kupp and Odell Beckham Jr. some opportunities to stretch the field. The matchup of the Rams offense vs. the Cardinals Defensive backfield will be the story of the game and if the Cardinals play like they have all year it will probably be a very long night for the Rams.
