With football winding down the NBA is starting to get more attention in what looks to be a very competitive and balanced league this year. Teams have been dealing with player absences on a consistent basis due to the recent covid outbreaks, so on a night in and night out it is common to see new roster combinations.

Whoever ends up winning the title this year will certainly be well deserved with all that the players are going through this season. The Suns and Warriors are still the favorites to come out of the west but have dropped a few games each over the past couple of weeks. The Suns were without head coach Monty Williams for four games, and you have to wonder if some of these absences will come back to bite teams when playoff seedings get finalized.

One of the big surprises in the NBA has been how competitive the East has been this year in what looks to be one of the deepest groups in the conference since the late 1990s. The Cavs, Wizards, and Hornets are all young and explosive and are teams to keep an eye on throughout the course of the season, while the top 4 teams in the East all seem like they could make a run to the Finals. In a season like this one, whoever makes it out will likely have the best luck with staying healthy down the stretch. In the West, the Warriors and Suns are still the heavy favorites, but as recent weeks have shown, one or two players missing in action makes these teams beatable.

Bucks vs. Raptors

After a slow start to the season, the Bucks have turned up the intensity in recent weeks as they make their push for back-to-back NBA titles. Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer entered covid protocols yesterday and is another example of a key figure being out of the action in an important game. The Raptors have clawed their way back to .500 and look like they could be one of the 4 teams that end up playing in the play-in game for the final playoff spots. Fred Van Fleet is averaging 21 ppg and rookie Scottie Barnes (15 ppg) has been bright spots for the Raptors.

Clippers vs. Suns

Deandre Ayton has missed the last few games due to being in Covid protocols

The Suns take on the Clippers at home Thursday night in a rematch from last year’s postseason series. The Clippers look like they will be without Kawhi for the entire season which has left the primary scoring responsibilities to Paul George. George is having a great year but the Clippers have a big gap to their 2nd best player and are still several players away from competing with the Warriors or Suns. The Suns are still without Deandre Ayton but their surrounding cast and deep bench have been playing well over the last couple of weeks.
