This week’s Thursday night game looks like it will provide plenty of fireworks as two of the league’s best offenses in the Chiefs and Chargers face off in Los Angeles. The Chargers have won 3 of 4 after going through a mid-season lull and the Chiefs are winners of 6 in a row as both teams look to be peaking at the right time.
If the Chiefs pull off the win they will be in a great spot to win the AFC West and secure one of the top seeds in the AFC. A Chargers win would put them atop of the AFC West standings and with an easy remaining schedule, the Chargers path to winning the division would get much easier if they can pull off the home upset on Thursday Night. Mahomes and the Chiefs have won 6 in a row
The Chiefs are the 3 point favorites on the road as they come into the game riding plenty of momentum with a 6 game win streak. The Chiefs started off slow but it looks like the offense has finally found a rhythm and the defense is starting to play much better as they have not allowed more than 20 points in a game during their 6 game win streak. That streak will be put to the test by the Chargers who showcase one of the games most explosive offenses that will be playing on the fast turf at Sofi Stadium
The AFC playoff picture is very crowded and this game will have major implications on the type of matchups we will likely see in January. The Chiefs currently sit in the 3 seed with a 9-4 record although they are tied for the league’s best record with the Titans and Patriots. A Chiefs win would put them in a position to wrap up the division title by winning two of their remaining three games. The Chargers already beat the Chiefs in Week 3 and a win on Thursday night would give the Chargers a leg up in the division tiebreaker if both teams finish with the same record.
Justin Herbert and the Chargers are real contenders in the AFC West
The big playmakers for both the Chiefs and Chargers all have favorable odds to get into the endzone Thursday night and it wouldn’t be a shocker to see three out of four or even all four players get into the end zone with the way Mahomes and Herbert have been playing as of late.
I have a hard time seeing this game staying under 52 total points and I think we could see a total closer to 70. If this game was being played in cold, windy Kansas City the 52 points would make sense. At Sofi Stadium the temperature will be a perfect climate-controlled 72 degrees, which should allow both teams playmakers to create separation offensively which should result in plenty of points on the scoreboard.
Justin Herbert and Patrick Mahomes are both in the top 5 for passing yards per game and touchdowns and head into this matchup firing on all cylinders. Mahomes struggled early in the year but is getting more protection up front in recent weeks which has helped him perform like the Mahomes we all love to watch. Herbert had a rough 3 game stretch around the midway mark but has bounced back with 11 TDs in his last 4 games.
Kansas City and Patrick Mahomes get all of the national attention while the Chargers typically play second fiddle in their own city to the Rams. I think the Chargers will use that lack of respect to sending a message to the rest of the league and country that they are legit Super Bowl contenders this year and I think they find a way to win a high scoring game at home with a final score of something like 38-34.
