NFL Thanksgiving Game Reviews

Chicago Sneaks Past Detroit

The Bears and Lions played a close but not very entertaining game. It was the equivalent of an elementary school soccer game where all 22 kids chase the ball around. That’s an exaggeration, but many fans were excited when the game ended so the next one could begin.

Matt Nagy continued clinging to his job with a 16-14 win his team sealed with a field goal as time expired.

Las Vegas Overtime Thriller

The Raiders suffered a three-game skid ahead of their matchup in Dallas against the Cowboys. Dak Prescott’s team also needed a win to erase the memory of a disappointing loss against Kansas City. Ultimately the Cowboys went home hungry as Las Vegas’ offense feasted in a 36-33 overtime classic.

Despite 28 penalties, this was easily the most enjoyable Thanksgiving Day game. DeSean Jackson even got to turn back the clock and haunt an NFC East team yet again. He finished the day with three receptions for 102 yards and a touchdown.

New Orleans Saints Superdome.

Buffalo Blows Out Saints

The Bills and Josh Allen suffered difficult losses to Indianapolis and Jacksonville in recent weeks. Sean McDermott wouldn’t let his team keep sinking down the NFL power rankings. Buffalo took it to the Saints in the Superdome. They won 31-6 and kept themselves near the AFC’s top.

Allen didn’t have the best night. He threw two interceptions for the third time in November. For reference, he only had two multi-interception games in 2020.

All-Pro cornerback Tre’Davious White suffered a torn ACL in the win.

Other Top Matchups

Pats Pulverize Titans

Mac Jones is looking more and more like “the man” in New England each week, and it’s making me nervous. I’m not sure the league could survive another 20-year dynasty under Bill Belichick. All talk about the future aside, the Patriots executed an excellent gameplan against Mike Vrabel’s Titans that led to a 36-13 rout.

Jones completed 23 of 32 passes for 310 yards and two touchdowns. New England gave the Titans everything they wanted on the ground but held Ryan Tannehill under 100 passing yards.

Buccaneers Look Vulnerable

Similar to last year, this Buccaneers team isn’t playing as well as expected. For all of their talent, Tampa Bay has two losses to teams with losing records.

Tom Brady’s team hung on 38-31 courtesy of an excellent two-minute drill by the future Hall of Fame quarterback. Indianapolis failed to get MVP candidate Jonathan Taylor involved early. By the time he started taking over in the fourth quarter, it was too late for the Colts.

Brady and Carson Wentz both threw interceptions that led to touchdowns for the opposing team. Brady has thrown six interceptions in his last four appearances.

Panthers quarterback Cam Newton.

Cam and Carolina Collapse

It’s great to see Cam Newton back in a Panthers uniform, but his future with the team remains unknown. He played well last week against Washington but completely collapsed in Week 12.

Newton had the worst performance of any NFL starting quarterback during the weekend slate. He completed five of 21 pass attempts for 92 yards and two interceptions. The Panthers eventually pulled him for P.J. Walker, who also went on to throw an interception.

Miami won 33-10 behind an efficient day from Tua Tagovailoa. The Dolphins and Panthers are 5-7.

Best Performances

Let’s start on the ground. Joe Mixon was the weekend’s most productive running back. He carried the ball 28 times for 165 yards and two touchdowns against Pittsburgh. He’s scored eight touchdowns in his last five games.

Leonard Fournette and Cordarrelle Patterson also had great games. Both ran for 100 or more yards and scored multiple touchdowns.

Micah Parsons and Jaelan Phillips were outstanding rookie pass rushers from Week 12. Parsons amassed ten pressures and a sack, while Phillips had three sacks.

Derwin James and Patrick Surtain II put on a showcase in the Denver-Los Angeles game. They combined for three interceptions.
