Polymarket is the world’s largest prediction market platform and recently partnered with a top-flight soccer league in Spain’s La Liga.
It is the company's first partnership with a European soccer league, and Polymarket is now the official prediction market partner with the Spanish league in the United States and Canada.
The multi-year deal covers content across digital and social platforms, as well as broadcast rights. It also covers the fan experience, as fans will be privy to VIP treatment for league matches and also virtual interactions with former La Liga stars. Polymarket will also have the exclusive right to use intellectual property not only for the league but also for all the clubs in it, including giants Real Madrid and FC Barcelona.
Becoming relevant
The recent partnership was brokered by LA LIGA AMERICA, which is a venture between La Liga and Relevent Sports Group. That group has been handling the commercial operations of the Spanish soccer league in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico since 2018.
Relevant CEO Boris Gartner stated that the rising popularity of soccer in North America has been driven by a younger, more culturally diverse audience. Because that audience watches matches on different digital displays, the leagues have to think outside the box when it comes to engagement strategies.
Polymarket founder and CEO Shayne Coplan was in agreement with Gartner’s sentiments, stating, “Our goal is to give fans a more expressive way to follow the game, where opinions on players, matches, and season outcomes can be reflected in real time. Partnering with La Liga brings that level of interaction to one of the most passionate global fanbases and introduces a new, more dynamic way for North American audiences to engage with the league.”
Growing sports portfolio
Polymarket is already entrenched in collaboration agreements with some of the top sports leagues in America.
It collaborates with Major League Baseball (MLB), Major League Soccer (MLS), and the National Hockey League (NHL). It's also allied with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
Building integrity
Polymarket has worked with sports leagues to build integrity into its sports offers, such as vulnerable-market restrictions on those that can be manipulated.
Integrity was also a priority of Polymarket in the recent deal with La Liga. The prediction market platform launched a dedicated sports integrity system in partnership with two of the larger data companies, Plantir Technologies and TWG AI.
Together, they will use the technology to monitor trade patterns and advocate for the integrity of La Liga matches.
Canadian roadblocks
While the new deal covers both the U.S. and Canada, there are some roadblocks for Polymarket north of the border. The platform cannot accept deposits, trades, or advertise in Ontario until 2027, as it is banned in the province by the Ontario Securities Commission.
This was a major roadblock for Polymarket, as Ontario is the most populous Canadian province and is home not only to two NHL teams but also to the Toronto Raptors and Toronto Blue Jays, the only NBA and MLB teams in Canada.
The platform is also juridically restricted from offering its services in Quebec.
