The streak is over; others continue

The Game 1 loss snapped the Canes' eight-game playoff winning streak after they swept their first two series.

Carolina has now lost their last seven Game 1s in conference finals, and their last 10 conference finals games at home.

Canadiens vs. Hurricanes Game 2 analysis

While the Hurricanes led the Eastern Conference in points this season, they have lost all four games against the Habs, including Game 1.

Two cuts the mustard, again

After getting torched for eight goals in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference semis, Montreal has only given up two goals in each of the last two games.

Jakub Dobes (9-6-0, 2.48 GAA, .911 save %) was pulled in Game 6, but he's stopped 52 of 56 shots over the last two contests.

Not the same Carolina team

The Canes came into the conference finals, only giving up 10 goals in their eight playoff wins before allowing six in Game 1.

Frederik Andersen entered the series as the playoff leader in goals-against average (1.12) and save percentage (.950), but he was peppered in the opener, surrendering five goals on 21 shots.

Habs’ leaders step up

Three of the four playoff point leaders for the Canadiens stepped up in Game 1.

Nick Suzuki (4 goals, 12 assists) had three assists, Juraj Slafkovsky (6 goals, 6 assists) had two goals and an assist, and Cole Caufield (5 goals, 6 assists) added a goal and an assist.

The Canes’ leaders step down

While the Habs’ leaders were the catalysts in the Game 1 win, the leaders for the Canes were blanked. Taylor Hall (3 goals, 9 assists), Jackson Blake (4 goals, 7 assists), and Logan Stankoven (7 goals, 1 assist) failed to register a point.

Blake and Stankoven were both minus-3 in the loss.

Slavin takes the blame

Carolina's star defenseman Jaccob Slavin made uncharacteristic mistakes and took the blame for the loss, stating, "Personally, I think I handed them the game."

Slavin had a minus-4 rating for only the second time in his career and the first of 95 playoff games.

PlayersBest pick: Hurricanes moneyline (-210)

Ok, so the Canes have lost their last 10 home games in the conference finals, and they were throttled in Game 1. Still, they are the pick.

Slavin is a star and will play much better, and Carolina will limit mistakes. Also, in Game 1, the Habs had 29 blocked shots, while Carolina had only 12. That will not happen again.

The Canes are too good to play that poorly again. Expect them to bounce back, tie the series with a Game 2 win, and snap their 10-game home losing streak in the conference finals.

Canadiens vs. Hurricanes Game 2 player prop picks

Here are some of the Game 2 player prop picks we like at FanDuel Sportsbook:

  • Logan Stankoven (+850) / Seth Jarvis (+750) to score a 1st period goal – The Canes’ attack will come out firing when the puck is dropped. These are good odds for Jarvis, who led the team in goals this season and scored in Game 1, and Stankoven, who leads the Canes in playoff goals.
  • Jakub Dobes Over 27.5 saves (-130) – Ok, so Dobes only faced 27 shots in Game 1, but the Habs blocked 30 shots, and in the previous three games, he faced an average of 36.
