Stanley Cup Final: Game 1 recap

In Game 1, the Golden Knights came back from a 2-0 first-period deficit to beat the Canes 5-4, outscoring them 2-1 in the third period.

Vegas won the series opener despite being outshot 27-23. Five different Golden Knights scored a goal, and Brayden McNabb had three assists. For Carolina, Nikolaj Ehlers had two goals, and Jalen Chatfield had two assists.

Golden Knights vs. Hurricanes Game 2 analysis: Repeat performance for Carolina

For the second consecutive opening game of a series, the Canes lost on home ice. In both contests, they made uncharacteristic mistakes, giving up 11 goals in total.

The game-tying goal for Vegas at the beginning of the second period and the go-ahead goal a few minutes later both came off Carolina turnovers. Canes’ defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere lost track of Tomas Hertl, allowing him into the slot to score the eventual game-winner.

The Canes cleaned up their mistakes after the Game 1 loss in the last series and must do so again.

Back to defense

The Game 1 loss snapped the Canes' four-game win streak, and they have to get back to playing defense. In the last series, they gave up six goals in the opener, then won the next four games, giving up only five.

Andersen has to rebound

Canes goalie Frederik Andersen came into the finals with a stellar playoff goals-against average of 1.41, but in Game 1's loss gave up five goals on only 23 shots for a paltry save percentage of .783.

Golden Knights are hot

The Golden Knights have now won seven in a row after rallying from multi-goal deficits in two of the last three games.

Brett Howden scored in Game 1, leads the playoffs with 11 goals, and has lit the lamp three times in the last five games. Mitch Marner and Jack Eichel rank first and second, respectively, in playoff points, and each had an assist in Game 1.

PlayersBest prediction: Hurricanes moneyline -160

OK, so the Canes lost Game 1, but they lost the last series opener and roared back to win four in a row. In that series, they faced the Montreal Canadiens, whom they lost to all three times in the regular season. Carolina also lost both regular-season matchups with the Golden Knights.

Like Game 2 of the last series, the Canes will limit their mistakes and get back to playing solid defense. That's why they'll win and knot the series at a game apiece, as it shifts to Sin City.
