Sports betting in Louisiana
Sports betting in Louisiana was finally legalized in November 2020. However, the laws surrounding this are slightly complicated. Rather than it being a state-wide law, each parish (known as counties in other states) in the state had to vote on whether to allow sports betting. As a consequence, there are 56 parishes of Louisiana in which sports betting is legal and eight in which it is not.
Following the decision outlined above, a number of major operators applied for a license to operate in Louisiana. As a consequence, five sportsbooks successfully completed the licensing process and launched in Louisiana on Friday, January 28th 2022.
The tax rates for online sportsbooks have been set at 15% for online bets and 10% for in-person retail bets – this is lower than many other states.
It is also worth noting that unlike in some other states (for example, New York), Louisiana residents can bet on college teams based in the state.
