The Cincinnati Bengals and Joe Burrow Will Win Super Bowl LVI

Publish Date:02/07/2022

The Cincinnati Bengals and Los Angeles Rams clash in Super Bowl LVI in Los Angeles on February 13. Joe Burrow and the Bengals took a treacherous road to reach this point. The franchise went over 30 years without a playoff win before beating the AFC’s top two seeds on game-winning field goals in back-to-back weeks. Cincinnati enters the Super Bowl as the betting underdog, but Zac Taylor’s team will finally bring a Lombardi Trophy to the Queen City.

Football fans can catch the 2021 season finale on NBC or stream it on Peacock. The average Super Bowl ticket this year costs over $9,000, so order some wings, invite a few friends over, and sink into your couch for a few hours. Your bank account will thank you.

Cincinnati’s Advantages in the Super Bowl

The Youth Movement

Credit the Bengals for quickly building one of the youngest, most exciting organizations in the NFL. Next week’s Super Bowl lineup features over half a dozen impact players still on their rookie contracts, including Burrow, Jessie Bates III, Ja’Marr Chase, Tee Higgins, Evan McPherson, Jonah Williams, and Logan Wilson. Joe Mixon and Sam Hubbard are in the first years of their second contracts.

Have you ever heard the phrase “you don’t know what you don’t know?” That’s how I feel about the Bengals. They’re four-point betting underdogs, a team built on swag and perceived invulnerability that really amounts to nothing in the face of a better team. However, Cincinnati’s players are convinced they’ll beat the Rams. They don’t know any better, and that will work in their favor against a Rams team loaded with veterans who have experienced heartbreak.

Before continuing with the Bengals Super Bowl LVI preview, let’s check out the upcoming action across the league.

Cincinnati’s Defensive Standouts

The Rams have some of the biggest names on the Super Bowl stage. Aaron Donald is perhaps one of the ten greatest defenders in NFL history, Von Miller is a former Super Bowl MVP, and Jalen Ramsey is progressing toward the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Those three are overshadowing a deep, impactful Bengals defense that could surprise plenty of fans.

Cornerback Chidobe Awuzie struggled through Cincinnati’s first three playoff games, but he was excellent during the regular season. Slot corner Mike Hilton is one of the most underrated stars in the league, and Cincinnati’s safety duo of Jessie Bates and Vonn Bell is performing at an insane level.

Along the defensive front, free agent addition Trey Hendrickson has 86 pressures and 16.5 sacks this year (including playoff totals). Outside of Donald, Hendrickson is the most productive pass rushing threat in the Super Bowl. The Bengals also possess the better overall interior defensive line, with B.J. Hill and D.J. Reader making running inside almost impossible.

Losing Larry Ogunjobi for the season takes away from Cincinnati’s triple-threat along their interior, but that group is still strong enough to push the pocket and make Matthew Stafford uncomfortable.

Can’t Cover Chase and Higgins

The Kansas City Chiefs tried to double cover Ja’Marr Chase in the AFC Championship Game, and they had plenty of success containing the rookie. However, Kansas City’s focus on Chase opened opportunities for Tee Higgins, who’s large enough to dominate any Rams defensive back not named Jalen Ramsey.

I expect the Rams will do everything they can to smother the Burrow-Chase connection. That likely includes putting Ramsey on Chase or keeping the versatile All-Pro in the rookie’s general vicinity. That leaves 5’9″ Darious Williams on Higgins, who is 6’4″ and weighs almost 30 pounds more than the former undrafted cornerback.

Most people recognize Chase as Cincinnati’s top deep threat. The LSU product stretches defenses vertically at an elite level, but Higgins has history as a downfield weapon dating back to his days with Clemson.
