Now that the Rams have taken home their second Super Bowl in franchise history, in a tough-played 23-20 matchup against the Bengals, we can look ahead to the 2022 NFL season. This past year brought good surprises like Joe Burrow and the Bengals. It brought bad surprises like CMC and Derrick Henry injuries. But most of all it brought an end of a few eras with Tom Brady, Ben Roethlisberger, and Andrew Whitworth all retiring. Who Will Go Number One?
In the last four years, quarterbacks have gone first pick overall (2021 Trevor Lawrence JAX, 2020 Joe Burrow CIN, 2019 Kyler Murray ARI, 2018 Baker Mayfield CLE). This year should be the first year since the Browns took DE Myles Garrett first overall in 2017.
Jacksonville chose their future quarterback Lawrence, from Clemson first overall last year, under failed-experimental coach Urban Meyer. Two-time Superbowl Winner Doug Pederson will now be coaching the Jaguars, and he’ll get a chance to choose his guys to help the Jaguars turn their program around. Odds are the Jaguars are grabbing an Offensive Lineman, and OT Evan Neal from Alabama looks like a slam dunk.
However, there are two amazing pass rushers in Kayvon Thibodeux (Oregon) and Aidan Hutchinson (Michigan) that could sway the Jaguars to pick best overall player and improve their horrid defense. There is always the chance they will trade down to gain an extra draft pick or two and still grab Neal, OT Ikem Ekwonu (NC State), or even OT Charles Cross (Miss St). If that were the case, the team moving up would probably go Thibodeux or Hutchinson, but could possibly go quarterback, with so many teams desperate for solutions. The top quarterbacks aren’t as flashy as last year’s draft, but Kyle Pickett (Pitt), Matt Corral (Mississippi), Malik Willis (Liberty), & Sam Howell (UNC) should all go first or second round.
