Fans and fighters alike have wanted to see the grudge match of #1 ranked welterweight Colby Covington and #6 Jorge Masvidal take place since this feud started years ago. This finally becomes a reality at UFC 272 on Saturday March 5th in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Co-Main as an interesting matchup as the veteran lightweight #6 Rafael Dos Santos will try to slow the roll of the up and coming #11 Rafael Fiziev.
We can only hope that UFC 272 gives us that 271 provided back on February 12th. That event saw Israel Adesanya win his sixth title defense to stay undefeated in the middleweight division. Tai Tuivasa won his fifth straight fight and cemented his spot at #3 in the heavyweight division by hand delivering a knockout to knockout king Derrick Lewis. Jared Cannonier won his fight via KO in the second round vs. Derek Brunson to move himself into the #2 middleweight spot and possibly setting up a title bout vs. Adesanya.
We correctly identified two out of those three results for UFC 271, so make sure to read on below for tips on what is likely to happen at UFC 272. My first tip is to get the best UFC odds with our live odds comparison tool before you bet on any of the fights.
In any sort of sport, whether it be MMA, boxing, or the Super Bowl, rivalries and passed disagreements or drama between competitors is conjured up to gain eyeballs and ticket sales. For this headline fight, none of that is needed. Covington and Masvidal started their MMA journey together as roommates, training partners, and best friends, but a rift has grown between the two and friendship has been replaced by hatred.
Masvidal accused Covington of never paying his striking coach Paulino Hernandez and in the leadup to the fight said he would leave him in, “critical condition.”
“I’m hoping that the referee, on the way to pulling me off of him, slips on a banana peel and I get some extra shots in and really change his life and face structure,” Masvidal said.
Covington points to other reasons for the hurt feelings. “I had just beat Rafael do Anjos for the interim title and… I think he [Masvidal] saw all the hype I was generating and he didn’t like that. He has a big ego and he couldn’t put his ego aside for the friendship. He didn’t like that I was getting the spotlight more and I was rising above him in the ranks.”
Whatever the reason for the feud, it could get settled on Saturday the 5th. To no one’s surprise, sports betting sites have Covington is a massive favorite at -380 thanks to his 11-3 record. Since 2015 he’s only lost two fights and both of them came against the current UFC pound for pound champion Kamaru Usman.
Masvidal is a huge underdog with odds at +290. He’s dropped four out of his last seven fights overall, and lost his last two in row. After nearly a decade in the UFC “Gamebred’s” career could be coming to an end if this fight doesn’t go his way.
Most, unsurprisingly, like Covington to win this fight. You never know what could happen in a match like this where emotions will be running high. Because of that, I don’t like this fight to go all five rounds, and think one of these men will try to finish it early. For those reasons, take the under at 4.5 rounds at +125.
The fight between these two was supposed to headline UFC Vegas 48, however Fiziev ran into Visa issues which forced the fight to be postponed. The 37 year old Dos Anjos is trying to get one last shot at the lightweight title after struggling in the welterweight division. Fiziev is is almost a decade younger at 28, and is quickly climbing the UFC ranks after winning all of his last five fights.
Although the Brazilian Dos Anjos is undoubtedly past his prime and facing a superior striker, his grappling could help even the playing field. The top bookmakers all have Fiziev around -250 and Dos Anjos at +200. They seem ready to around pronounce the Kyrgyztani the winner of this fight, but I’m not convinced. Take Dos Anjos for the upset and the big payday.
