Louisiana’s online sports betting legalization process went down a bit differently than in other states, considering it wasn’t a statewide ballot process. Here’s what you need to know about wagering on sports in Louisiana parish-wise.
The Pelican State decided to hold its voting process for the legalization of online sports betting the same way it did when it came to legalizing Daily Fantasy Sports in 2018. The state follows this process to honor a precedent set in Louisiana when it comes to voting on gambling-related subjects.
When the 2020 election came around, more than 52 parishes voted in favor of the legalization of online sports betting, leaving at least nine parishes strongly opposing the process.
Parishes that voted against the legalization of online sports betting in LA are located in more sparsely-populated areas of the Pelican State. On the other hand, most parishes that voted for the legalization of sports betting were located in urban or metropolitan areas that are naturally more densely populated.
These areas are also closer to and exposed to businesses that would include casinos, slot machines, and other types of gambling like racing and the lottery. After the 2020 election, some time still had to pass before things sprung into action for online sports betting in the Pelican State.
Only in June 2021, did Governor John Bel Edwards sign the sports betting bill (SB 247) after the previous year’s majority approval vote. Then, last Friday, January 28th, 2022, the first online sportsbooks made their legal appearance in Louisiana — ready to gain a following.
The sportsbooks that entered the Louisiana online betting arena on January 28 this year are all major operators across the US. They are BetMGM Sportsbook, BetRivers Sportsbook, DraftKings Sportsbook, FanDuel Sportsbook, Barstool Sportsbook, and none other than Caesars Sportsbook.
