We’ve scoured all of cyberspace looking for the most interesting ways to bet. During our adventures at PlayersBest, we’ve seen an incredible amount of variety and creativity out there. Like the unknowns of space, there’s more than a mere mortal man could possibly comprehend. With that said, no matter how far our ship has wandered into the endless night sky, there’s one we keep coming back to: the accumulator bet.
If you don’t know what that is yet, don’t worry, all will be revealed soon. And if you do know what accumulator betting is, we hope that we give you some greater appreciation here. We also hope to give you some strategy insights to help you tackle these often mammoth betting meteors.
You may be someone who has seen accumulator betting advertised and wondered what it was all about. Or, if you keep seeing the word “acca” around and haven’t the faintest idea what it means, then we’re here to help.
It’s very simple: an accumulator – or acca bet – is a bet where several selections are made and they all need to win in order for you to see a return on your bet. This means that only one selection needs to fail in order for your entire bet to fail. On the flip side, your returns also get an astronomical boost should they all come in. You can choose to bet on as few as two selections, or as many as 16, sometimes even more.
Let’s say you placed a four-fold accumulator. You backed four different teams to win different games. Three of them won and one lost. In this scenario, you would have lost your entire wager. Every single selection needs to come in for accumulator bets to be successful. In acca betting, one selection losing has the exact same result as all of them losing.
This makes it different from combination betting, which it is often confused with. Combination betting is where several bets are placed with the aim of mitigating potential losses. With accumulators, it is an all or nothing scenario, with a potential supercluster of a win if they all come in.
You may have read our explanation of what an accumulator is and thought it was a rather simple proposition. It’s a case of high risk, high reward, and that’s true. Indeed, unlike astronomical bodies, part of the appeal is that anyone can understand them.
However, like all great forms of betting, accumulators have hidden depths. Here, we’re going to take you through five reasons we think this is such an exceptional way to bet you may not have considered.
When we say high risk, we’re of course referring to your chances of losing. No sound strategy would advise you to bet a lot on a hugely long odds accumulator. But, even the long odds part isn’t necessarily true.
There’s a whole lot of scope in which you can place an accumulator. Let me give you an example. Your favourite team has three games coming up that all seem like very likely wins. Because of that, those wagers aren’t all that interesting. A small accumulator on those three would produce decent, if not overwhelmingly long odds, and would give those games some more interest. This brings me nicely onto our next point…
We just gave an example of how accumulators can provide extra interest across games. We really think that’s the accumulator’s greatest strength. Multiple bets all hanging together creates an amazing through-line to keep you invested in long tournaments, for instance. It can also allow you to craft a series of deeply thought-through bets that create a full narrative of predicted events.
Indeed, to get the most out of your accumulators, we suggest you do exactly that and we’ll be discussing it more shortly. This can make you think more deeply and appreciate your favourite sports on whole new levels. If betting is about enhancing your enjoyment of sports, then accumulators stand in a galaxy all of their own.
Part of the problem with betting really small is that it means your returns are often, well, very small. Imagine trying to spot your house from the moon – that’s like your potential results. But you may not want to bet a lot. If that sounds like you, then accumulator bets could be the perfect solution. They can provide great interest for very little. That in itself holds value.
Let’s say you place an eight-fold accumulator with £5. If they win, the odds are large enough to be a very inviting prospect. But also, you’ve kept your betting well within your spending limits. Say the bet loses on your sixth selection. Thanks to the bet, each game was an absolute nail-biter. You may be disappointed, but surely that £5 was worth the extra entertainment on its own. That’s the power of the accumulator bet.
Bookmakers love accumulators. For all their advantages, bookmakers make a lot of money out of them. Obviously, if you’re talking about something with monstrous odds, the majority of people are going to lose those bets. That’s the reality of long odds, along with potentially huge payouts. This has a couple of big advantages though.
One of those is that accumulators are available at almost all major operators we can find – and on a massive amount of markets as well. Often, when you like a betting market, you have to accept that you just can’t find it wherever you want. That’s rarely the case with accumulators. They’re one of the most popular and most common betting types around.
The other big benefit of bookmakers being such massive fans of accumulator bet options is that many are happy to be pretty generous when it comes to promotions. You’ll regularly see promotions that offer extra percentages on your accumulator winnings, for instance.
Another common bonus is Acca Insurance, where you receive your stake back if your bet loses by a single selection. Accumulators are also regularly allowed as part of other free bet promotions. You can also sometimes get special or enhanced odds on certain events or tournaments. It’s a tapestry as rich and glimmering at the night sky. Few can compete with accumulators in terms of promotional generosity.
With the possibility of winnings that are out of this world – but odds that can shake you right to the Earth’s core – we thought some betting tips were in order to take the sting out of long odds. Make no mistake, a massive accumulator is still exactly that. We can’t tell you anything that can change the likelihood of those events occurring. But we can give you some advice to help you make the most out of your acca bet.
Look at your bets as a whole and think ‘would it make sense if all these things occurred?’ Say for instance, you have results which would indicate a wildly different form from a team. That’s probably pretty unlikely, and them performing within a consistent frame of quality would make more sense. Remember, these bets are all about how they work together. Always keep that in mind.
This one is so simple, you could explain it to a martian. Accumulators can mean massive payouts – so huge, in fact, they may go over the maximum amount allowed from the operator. That’s right, the operator can put limits on how much you can withdraw from them. This is called the maximum payouts.
If your accumulator goes over that maximum on a 15-fold, for instance, there would be no benefit to going to a 16-fold. You can usually find out what the maximum amount is pretty easily from the site or customer service.
You probably think your chances of getting a coin flip right are pretty decent, right? Certainly well within our Earthly realms of possibility. What about a few more times? Ten correct guesses probably still seems possible. It’s actually well over one in a thousand in terms of probability.
That’s why when you’re going for a big accumulator bet, it’s likely a bad idea to pile on long odds. Anything is possible, of course, but keeping the individual bets low keeps your chances at least within this universe.
This one couldn’t be simpler. Some people have this alien idea that promotions aren’t worth their time. If you think this, you probably want to look at a new operator. There’s a ton of great promotions out there, especially for accumulators. Our advice is simple: take advantage of every decent bonus going.
Even if you know exactly what an accumulator bet is and have used them in the past, we hope this article really helped you realise their potential. They’re not just long-shot bets but bets that can really change the way you think about your favourite sports – possibly, enjoy them a bit more too. We’d say that makes you a winner no matter the result.
