Connecticut Becomes the Sixth US State to Legalise Online Gambling

On the 19th October 2021, the citizens of Connecticut – at least, those of who are over the age of 21 – will be able to gamble legally within the borders of their state. This legalisation not only includes online sports betting but online casino gambling as well, including regulated online poker.

Connecticut gambling

Connecticut became the sixth state to legalise the pastime, joining Nevada, New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania and Michigan. After a seven-day soft launch back on the 12th October, the new laws rolled out nationwide at 6am on Tuesday morning. The first mobile sports bet is stated to have been made on the Los Angeles Dodgers making a comeback in their series against the Atlanta Braves.

These broad changes in the law have overcome several challenges. These include those from legislators who have long opposed any loosening of strict online gambling laws, and the interests of state recognised tribes, the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and the Mohegan Tribe. With regards to the opposing political forces, they were outvoted by the Connecticut House 122-22 to legalise online gambling back in May 2021.

The aforementioned tribes, who own major casinos within the state, have partnered with Fanduel and Draftkings to deliver both online sportsbooks and iGaming offerings. Part of this deal is that the Connecticut Lottery is offering mobile sports betting but will not be running any online casino gaming.

Considerations for Connecticut bettors

Although these changes are very broad, there are restrictions which are specific to the state. Firstly, bettors must be within the borders of Connecticut in order to enjoy any of the offerings from legal online gambling facilities within this state. They must use sites that are legal within the state and games that are approved by the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection.

The legalisation of online gaming does not mean that residents can choose any sports betting or casino site from across the world. It is not enough for the site to be legal elsewhereL it must be legally approved in Connecticut. Whether a site is available in the state should be made absolutely clear during the signup process.

Thai does mean, because it is still fairly early days, that Connecticut won’t yet enjoy as much variety as some other US ss. However, more and more options will be added as time goes on, and what is already available does include some of the most respected betting operators in the world.
