Manchester City can finally seal their fifth Premier League title with victory over Chelsea on Saturday evening in what is also now a dress rehearsal for the 2021 Champions League final in Istanbul.
It promises to be quite an evening at the Etihad Stadium and we have analysed the key data trends in order to unearth the best quality betting selection for the Sky Sports fixture.
Pep Guardiola’s side head into the weekend with confidence sky high after reaching their first Champions League Final in midweek and they now have an opportunity to put down a marker for the Istanbul showdown.
A fifth Premier League crown has been a formality for some time but victory on Saturday will ensure that no one can catch the Citizens and that could prove a factor come the end of May because Pep Guardiola will have the luxury of resting and rotating his top stars with the Champions League Final in mind – a luxury his opposite number Thomas Tuchel doesn’t have.
It hasn’t taken Thomas Tuchel long to whip this talented Chelsea side into shape and although they squander chances, they are proving a ridiculously hard side to break down and 18 clean sheets in 24 games is testament to how well coached they are under the German.
One of those clean sheets came against Manchester City at Wembley last month where a second-half Hakim Zyech strike proved enough to send Chelsea back to Wembley for a fourth time in five years.
It’s a busy time for Chelsea who must quickly refocus after Wednesday’s victory over Real Madrid, because there is still work to do if they are to secure a top four spot in the league.
Manchester City just have the edge in recent encounters between these sides but they found the new, improved version of Chelsea too tough a nut to crack in last month’s FA Cup semi-final at Wembley and they are going to need to be a good deal more incisive in their attacking play if they are going to break down the Blues’ stubborn rear-guard.
Both teams have found the net in the last three league fixtures between these sides and, with so much at stake for both clubs, then this clash could easily turn out to be a good deal more entertaining than the FA Cup match.
FA Cup semi-final apart, this fixture that tends to throw up goals in recent years – the last three league clashes have produced at least three goals, with both teams getting on the scoresheet each time. A fifth league title is on the line for City and Chelsea and going to need to be at their most resilient to keep the hosts at bay.
City will be keen to avenge last month’s FA Cup semi-final defeat and lay down a Champions League Final marker so the best bet here has to be a Manchester City win (home win).
Things clearly didn’t go City’s way in the FA Cup semi-final but they looked a class above Chelsea in their 3-1 win at Stamford Bridge earlier in the season and they have won the last three editions of this league fixture.
Pep Guardiola’s side know that three points guarantees them the Premier League title and they could hardly come into this fixture in better form having looked such a class act in the Champions League in midweek.
Pep looks sure to ring the changes from that game but the City squad is packed with depth and the likes of Raheem Sterling, Jesus and Rodri will all be keen to show their manager that they deserve a place in that Champions League Final starting eleven.
Chelsea know that fourth spot in the Premier League is within reach but they put a lot into Wednesday’s victory over Real Madrid and that extra day rest might just help to swing things in the hosts favour.
Back Manchester City to win the game with William Hill at odds of 19/20.
