Premier League Betting Tips · 17.09.2021 - 20:00 · St James’ Park

Staring down at the abyss of relegation – especially for two sides which have felt its sting in the past – must be very much like peering into the English domestic football equivalent of a foreboding black hole. And as captain of this ship, let me tell you, manoeuvring out the way of those things can be quite the motivator.

That’s why, alongside more specific Premier League betting tips, this captain hopes for a thrilling contest between the struggling Leeds United and Newcastle teams, both of which have failed to win a game thus far this season. They may seem like lightyears away from the end of the road just yet, but these early games, as time has shown us, are of grave importance.

The current constitution

Improvements at Newcastle Yield Few Rewards

If the Premier League were to conclude tomorrow, it would spell the end of Newcastle’s time in the top flight of English football for the immediate future. At only four games in, it remains early days, but the warning signs are already there – like a meteor at the edge of your vision.

They fell victim to an awesome 4-2 West Ham comeback in their opening game of the season, despite being twice upfront, and followed this up with a 2-0 loss to Aston Villa, even with improvements. These finally bore fruit in a 2-2 thriller against Southampton. But unfortunately, momentum was again halted against the runaway Ronaldo train in their last outing against Manchester United.

Leeds Fail to Capitalise on Last Season’s Momentum

Few teams will feel the same level of pressure Leeds United must when they slide down those Premier League standings – having only returned to the Premier League last season after a generation lost in space. Their return was full of light and lasers, besting huge teams like Tottenham Hotspurs and Manchester City and ending up at a very respectable ninth place. It was certainly worthy of a captain’s commendation.

So far this season, they haven’t rekindled that sparkle. They’ve failed to perform as giant-killers against Liverpool and Manchester United, but late game equalisers against both Burnley and Everton showcased their resilience, as well as the starpower of Bamford and Raphinha.

Head to Head

You may be surprised to learn that Leeds United and Newcastle have had less than 100 games throughout their history. Even more cosmic is that they’ve won 39 games apiece, meaning this is a tiebreaker for nearly a century of contests.

Most relevant though to our Premier League betting tips UK are the last two, as the third took place in the 2017 Championship, when they were quite different teams. Well, it’s as clear as the glow of the moonlight as to who has the recent historical advantage, with Leeds United besting Newcastle 5-2 in 2020, and 2-1 in January this year.

Our Betting Tip for Today

In all my years across the online betting cosmos, I have rarely found a prediction as tough as this one. They just have so much in common. Both have moon boots of potential but experienced disappointing starts to the season. Taking everything into account though, I’m going with a tight Leeds United victory.

Leeds United to Pick Up Momentum and Take the Victory

If I were to base my predictions solely on the last four games from the Premier League, I think I would have to go for a draw or perhaps the slightest of edges to a Newcastle victory. That’s based on the home ground advantage, considering their similar performance level. However, these games don’t exist in the vacuum of space and it comes off many months of excellent, beyond expectation performances from Leeds United, including recent victories over Newcastle.

I don’t think we’ve seen Leeds hit their highest gear by a long shot this season and I think now, with the pressure mounting, it could give the gravitational push Leeds need to hit a higher level and walk away with their first win of the season. However, as far as Premier League betting tips go, this is a close one.
